Exercise Tips for Small Dog Breeds

It's a common myth that small dogs don't need much exercise. In reality, most small breeds are energetic and benefit from daily activity — it just looks a little different than exercising a larger dog.

How Much Exercise Do Small Dogs Need?

Most small breeds do well with 20-30 minutes of activity a day, split across a couple of walks or play sessions. High-energy breeds like Jack Russells or Papillons may need more.

Safe Ways to Exercise

  • Short, frequent walks rather than one long one
  • Interactive play with a ball launcher or tug toy
  • Indoor games on hot or rainy days
  • Puzzle feeders to add mental stimulation alongside physical activity

Watch for Overexertion

Small dogs can overheat or tire faster than bigger breeds. Watch for heavy panting, slowing down, or reluctance to keep moving, and always have water on hand during longer outings.
